Grappa at Pudong International Airport, Shanghai

Well, finding meatless dining in China was advised to me as extremely difficult. Maybe in other parts of China but i thought Shanghai was quite easy. Shanghai is such a metropoliton city, i was amazed. Most people spoke English well and getting around was pretty easy too. I stayed  in the middle of the city,on Nanjing Road and that helped tremendously. There were Mcdonalds, KFC and Subway just nearby our hotel, The Central Hotel Shanghai.

The lovely revolving door of the hotel.

Out on Nanjing road you can try the lovely Sugar plums. They rather large sour plums that are coated with icing sugar. Extremely divine , i just went back for more every other day. Could not get enough of it.

Well, you cant find any Vegie burger in Mcdonalds China, so best is to settle with a meatless McChicken there. However in KFC, they have something called the Egg & vegetable soup. I'm not sure what was put in the soup stock, but it's ingredients where only eggs , carrot and spinach. So it was a refreshing change to see something different on the menu.

Now if you ever see someone selling familiar Malaysian curry puffs on the streets , you have every reason to jump with joy - like what i did. Only problem is the friendly people who sold it did not understand when i asked what was the filling. This roadside peddler was selling this right in front of a Mosque , near YuYuan Garden in Shanghai. After many attempts of miscommunication between both parties, we agreed to try this to see if it tasted like home. It certainly looked the same.

It had peanut filling :-). No wonder we didn't understand. We kept asking if it was chicken or beef :-)

Well there are several vegetarian restaurants that i googled up in Shanghai that i wanted to try but just had no time. Next visit i guess.

You can find meatless options in Shanghai airport too. Check out this restaurant Grappa, an Italian restaurant that was first opened in Hong Kong in 1990. The Grappa in Pudong International Airport opened in June2014 and serves authentic Italian cuisine. Prices are quite on the high side, but if you have leftover RMB that you want to finish up, here would be good to splurge. The nice thing about this restaurant is that the vegetarian options are marked with a green broccoli sign, easier to spot.

Ranging from Mozarella Pomodoro Salads that start from RMB89 to Spaghetti Marinara ( RMB79) , 3 different types of Veggie Pizzas ( RMB99) , the food were freshly prepared upon order and looked very appetizing. We settled for Mushroom Soup and Penna Arriabiata Vegetarian. Soup was rich and creamy while the Penne , had just the right amount of everything.

Bon Appetit Folks..

  2. Your blog is very informative. Many thanks to you. I have also started eating healthy food specifically plant based. I'm always searching for restaurants serving healthy vegetarian food in China, or in Shanghai city. And found this great new restaurant named "Happy Buddha" in Shanghai cooking up veggiefied American comfort food for the people of this city. It is launching a crowdfunding campaign to help them make the move to become 100% plant-based in 2018! With your help, we will continue to make Shanghai healthier and happier. Please help them spread the news! Thank you! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-us-spread-more-vegan-love-in-shanghai-restaurant-food#/

  5. The best thing to do in Hongkong is to taste a variety of food platters. These mouth watering foodpics are justified to the tourists who are visiting Hongkong to keep a long lasting memory of their journey. Thanks for sharing with us.
