SuperVeg Cafe at Puchong

*** Update**
Revisited this place today, and looks like they have changed the layout of the place..Feels  more cosy now and people running this place are definitely more friendly. One new dish i thought i should mention that is worth a shout is the Dry Wan Ton Mee. Trying is this time round made me wish why i didnt come here sooner. BBQ Char Siew was chewy and juicy while the Wan Tons in the soup, had complemented the dish so well...
********

There's a new vegetarian, vegan cafe in Puchong called SuperVeg Cafe. With so many vege restaurants sprouting out in and around KL, i'm amazed how they can still come up with different and interesting names to call them.

SuperVeg is located around Puteri Mart, at the block behind The WOK. Its a bit difficult to find as its not on the main road. Having another vegetarian restaurant  as its neighbour did not deter Superveg's opening. Though neighbor servers authentic Chinese vegetarian cuisine, SuperVeg concentrates on alternative meals, ranging from Western , Asian and Fusion. They server breakfast, lunch , and dinner. The setup of the shop is rather simple, and very spaced out. You got to order and pay at the counter and the meals will be served at your table.

Their menu's are written on the blackboard at the back of the shop and they have a "Today's Special section" .

I got very excited seeing the options there. Burgers, Wraps, Fish and Chips, Chicken chop. Buns, Pizza, Sandwiches, Soups and Salads, Nasi Lemak and rice dishes. Quite a lot i would say. Prices are quite reasonable , for their portions.

Kids wanted the normal Sweet and Sour Chicken with rice, Ragu got the Nasi Lemak and i settled with the SuperVeg Burger .

The Sweet Sour presentation was just like any other shop. Taste was good. But ordinary.

There are two types of Nasi Lemak , one is with boiled egg(3.90) and another SuperVeg Nasi Lemak  (RM6.50) with Fried egg and curry Chicken. We had the latter.

The least one could ask for when ordering a nasi lemak is having some lemak in the rice, and not served with white rice. Quite a disappointment for us, but for those who prefer plain rice nasi lemak, you'll be happy. As per their website, this is their signature dish, with really good sambal. I must admit, it was nice.Chicken curry was on the sweetish side.

My SuperVeg Burger ( RM5.50)made up for our disappointment with the nasi lemak. The burger had a fried egg, cheese and vegetarian patty with slight mayo , served with warm fries.

Our opinion : if you want quick vegetarian version of fast foods, you can head here. And you should be a mock meat lover to enjoy the foods here. ( Ragu wasn't a fan of it at all) . Food was nothing extraordinary, from the few that we could sample. But if you are around the area, you might want to drop by to try out their other dishes, like Bak Kut Teh and Pizza.Do share your views if they are good.

Bon Appetit

KindMeal.my

I stumbled upon KindMeal.my few months back and thought that it was hitting the nail on the head.. Just what i was searching for and just what my blog promotes as well. Meatless and vegetarian dining.  Let me explain further.

KindMeal.my is Malaysia's first meat-free lifestyle platform, offering a unique and compassionate angle towards promoting restaurants and cafes, with the primary objectives of saving animals, health, environment and money.

Restaurants are provided with an attractive showcase of their vegetarian offerings, and a hassle-free system for food lovers to obtain immediate discounts for meat-free meals. Savings are doubled if shared on social media to promote the welfare causes.

To enjoy the delicious meat-free deals, just visit http://KindMeal.my or download the app for digital coupons and dine instantly. No upfront payment, booking or printing is needed. And thats the nice part about this. Its not like Groupon or any other Deal site that you need to buy first. You will only need to make payment at the restaurant when you use the coupon to purchase your food.

This entire concept  began way back in 2008, by Andy Koh , starting off withPetFinder.my who have been working hard with nationwide animal shelters, rescuers, and pet lovers to improve Malaysia's animal welfare. Much of their focus was centered upon pets. Hence KindMeal was born. A platform for anyone, regardless of age, gender or financial status, to save lives (animals) anywhere, anytime. Without requiring any effort, time or money. In fact, they can even SAVE money.

As a KindMeal user for the past few months, i found this place great. I share my pics and info with all who are just like me, searching for good meatless and vegetarian food , Via KindMoments tab, I learn from others what to eat, where to find them and how to order.

So folks, please feel free to browse through their website and enjoy the joys of meatless dining.

Welcome to the world of saving animals.

Bon Appetit.

Restoran Taulat Sungai Petani @ Mee Tajudeen

What makes a good plate of Mamak Mee? Will it be those chunky ingredients they throw in while frying, or that lovely gravy poured on top of a Mamak mee goreng just before dishing out , or is it the texture of the yellow noodles. It can vary from one person to another but here ,i will share with you one place that is close to perfect in every way for me. When i speak to friends from my hometown , some beg to differ when i choose Mee Tajudeen as my haunting ground . They say the other two are equally as good, maybe better.I'll introduce the other two later, but first lets talk about the famous Restoran Taulat in Sungai Petani. SP is about 45 min drive from Penang Island, and trust me, this place produces too many good food options for the north. Coming close to the likes of Penang foods, at times , even better.

On the main road of SP, just after the clock tower , you would see a restaurant located in a bungalow lot on the right. Thats where you need to park to try one of the best noodles in the north. 3 main dishes that you need to try are Pasembor, their signature Mee Rebus and the classic Mee Goreng. I've been eating food from this place ever since i graduated off my diapers and the taste has not changed even after all these years.

Cause im a vegetarian, Unc Tajudeen ( the chef and owner) will only allow me to order the Pasembor and Mee Goreng, cause the gravy of the Mee Rebus has prawns.  In Pasembor, which is another name for Rojak in the north, he would omit the prawn based fritters and only put what we can eat. Code name in Tamil is  " Saivam" and he knows what to do.

                                                                       Pasembor

The eggs in the pasembor is optional , and he adds a good helping of potatoes , Fried tofu and flour fritters on top of the bed cucumber, beans sprouts and sengkuang. This is then drenched with an amazing not too sweet peanut gravy with a tinge of spice. No noodles in this , like a salad food for some.

Ragu usually orders his favourite , which is the Mee Rebus. This dish is one of their best sellers.  The thick gravy combined with the yellow noodles and dash of chilli  gravy has all tastes that will hit your tastebuds instantly. You would be sitting there just mind-numbed.

                                                                                               Mee Rebus

The other option for vegetarian is the Mee Goreng. This has been a classic in this shop. If you want a not too spicy, not too sweet, not soaking in oil, tastes good in each mouthfull , then you know where to come. In the Klang Valley or anywhere else around Malaysia, its really difficult to spot good mamak mee goreng. Apart from one shop in JB that came quite close to this taste, in my opinion all fades in comparison. However its up to you to taste and let me know your views. In this you can also opt for eggs or none, and the chef will put in the vegetarian ingredients only.

                                                                       Mee Goreng

We were stuffed with other food and got this packed for our drive back to KL. And that too , if you say its for KL, he makes it without beans sprouts so it can withstand the 5 hour drive back...

Two other famous shops in SP that contend for the best mee goreng, is Mee Alaudin and AKhan Mee. Both have been around for years and years and good foods never falter.

I cant comment on the other two. Probably will do a taste off one day , between all three to see who has it best.

Until then, if you ever pass a town call Sungai Petani on your way up north, do try this place out.

Bon Appetit

Grappa at Pudong International Airport, Shanghai

Well, finding meatless dining in China was advised to me as extremely difficult. Maybe in other parts of China but i thought Shanghai was quite easy. Shanghai is such a metropoliton city, i was amazed. Most people spoke English well and getting around was pretty easy too. I stayed  in the middle of the city,on Nanjing Road and that helped tremendously. There were Mcdonalds, KFC and Subway just nearby our hotel, The Central Hotel Shanghai.

The lovely revolving door of the hotel.

Out on Nanjing road you can try the lovely Sugar plums. They rather large sour plums that are coated with icing sugar. Extremely divine , i just went back for more every other day. Could not get enough of it.

Well, you cant find any Vegie burger in Mcdonalds China, so best is to settle with a meatless McChicken there. However in KFC, they have something called the Egg & vegetable soup. I'm not sure what was put in the soup stock, but it's ingredients where only eggs , carrot and spinach. So it was a refreshing change to see something different on the menu.

Now if you ever see someone selling familiar Malaysian curry puffs on the streets , you have every reason to jump with joy - like what i did. Only problem is the friendly people who sold it did not understand when i asked what was the filling. This roadside peddler was selling this right in front of a Mosque , near YuYuan Garden in Shanghai. After many attempts of miscommunication between both parties, we agreed to try this to see if it tasted like home. It certainly looked the same.

It had peanut filling :-). No wonder we didn't understand. We kept asking if it was chicken or beef :-)

Well there are several vegetarian restaurants that i googled up in Shanghai that i wanted to try but just had no time. Next visit i guess.

You can find meatless options in Shanghai airport too. Check out this restaurant Grappa, an Italian restaurant that was first opened in Hong Kong in 1990. The Grappa in Pudong International Airport opened in June2014 and serves authentic Italian cuisine. Prices are quite on the high side, but if you have leftover RMB that you want to finish up, here would be good to splurge. The nice thing about this restaurant is that the vegetarian options are marked with a green broccoli sign, easier to spot.

Ranging from Mozarella Pomodoro Salads that start from RMB89 to Spaghetti Marinara ( RMB79) , 3 different types of Veggie Pizzas ( RMB99) , the food were freshly prepared upon order and looked very appetizing. We settled for Mushroom Soup and Penna Arriabiata Vegetarian. Soup was rich and creamy while the Penne , had just the right amount of everything.

Bon Appetit Folks..
